Are ‘Greens’ Helping? – Acid and Alkaline Levels

Long time readers should be aware that I suffer and have suffered since day one of dieting, with exhaustion. I am tired, always. No matter how much I sleep, no matter how much water I drink. Vitamins don’t seem to help all that much. I am just tired.

I am also incredibly thirsty all the time. No amount of water seems to help. I drink over 6L of water a day and could drink more, easily. Just always feel thirsty and am always drinking water. I don’t have a diet high in salt (at all) and I don’t drink any carbonated drinks anymore, which I have heard makes dehydration worse.

Last month I discovered that perhaps all this was because of the acidity of the Dukan diet, that maybe my PH balance was out of wack, low alkaline levels might be the cause of my exhaustion and constant thirst.
Of course, not being a Doctor, I really have no idea.

The other day I had a long conversation with an amazing woman I was introduced to through my aunt. She actually competes in bodybuilding and has the EXACT stage body I want. Just a stunning woman. So nice and helpful I am really thankful for our conversation.

So, she mentioned that to balance out how acidic my diet is maybe I should look into ‘greens’. I did, picked up a tub of powder and have been taking it for a few days now.

It has something like 13 servings of veggies, tastes ok… and by ok I mean pretty gross but tolerable.

It is supposed to balance out your acid and alkaline levels, says so right on the container. Very promising. I hope it’s enough to fix me. I’ll let you know after a few weeks if it does anything.

So far, I have not noticed a difference. I have been taking it every day since last Thursday. We will see by the end of the container if it has helped anything. I should also try and eat more veggies on my own.

The brand I bought is ‘Progressive’ and it’s called ‘Greens’. Hopefully I feel better and I can share some good news with you guys, with anyone suffering from severe dehydration or exhaustion while following Dukan or another high protein diet.

Like I said though, I’m not a Doctor, you should always talk to your Doctor before using a supplement like this. I’ll let you know if it works! My fingers are crossed because I really do feel like crap, and I have on and off for the almost year I have followed Dukan and my new similar high protein diet.

xoxo

  1. Hey! So are the greens okay for Phase 2 veggie days? I am so tired all the time. Like walking up a flight of stairs makes me want to curl into a ball.

    1. Like I said, ask your Doctor if you really have a concern, always. But this is a supplement (powder) that is availlable readily at health food stores, or in my case, I picked it up at GNC (General Nutrition Center) the place where I buy my protein powder.

I would think so, the only ingredients are allowed on Dukan and like I said, it is 13 full servings of vegetables in a single scoop, one scoop a day. I got mine in blueberry flavor.

I would try it honey, it can't hurt, it's veggies. It will balance out your PH levels and raise your alkaline (which is good) read the label and check it out, see if it's something you want to take.

  5. Thanks for the Blog it has been helpful . day8 for me on PP and ( I think my scales lie) I've lost2.5kg, I am keeping up my water and have had no problems. To all with excessive thirst please check with your doctors as this is one of the first signs of diabetes. Thanks again

    1. Actually, on Dukan thirst is often because the PP days result in water loss, and if you don't up your water A LOT, you can end up in a deficit, constipation, or both! I drink more water on PP days, and cut back a little on PV days. I'm only a few lbs from my goal weight, and my blood sugar values have never been bad, so I know for me the thirst is from Dukan.

    2. I agree with Veerukka here. I was afraid it was because of diabetes as well and it isn't a bad thing (at all) to get your blood sugar levels checked, but this diet is too acidic, which is what I attribute my constant thirst too.

Thank you for reading and GOOD LUCK MY DEAR! Don't cheat, ever. You can do it! :)

    3. Just to add another thought into the mix, I was reading a great article on safe starches on a Paleo website and it was talking about thirst / dry mouth, etc but relating it to low glucose levels in the body. Here's a snippet I thought may interest you.

"VLC (very low carb) diet reduces mucus production, since mucus is primarily made of water and sugars. Mucus is made from glycoproteins; when these proteins are broken down in gluconeogenesis, they are unavailable to be used as mucus. This dries out the eyes, mouth, and intestines, depriving the body of a crucial barrier against irritants and pathogens and increasing the risk of infection and gastrointestinal cancers. During 2 years on a zero-carb diet, Dr. Jaminet personally noticed uncomfortable dryness in his eyes and mouth, and self-experimentation revealed glucose deficiency as the major culprit. He cites other low-carb dieters who have had similar experiences, as well as a study showing that dry membranes commonly occur during starvation, when the body breaks down its stores of protein to maintain glucose levels".

    4. Thanks Sonia for the info... but does she know how to fix it!?

Hmmmmm... that's so interesting. I really need to do more research on the subject :S The problem being that low carb diets are so new and I feel food sciences are also so new. We really have limited information on the subject and it's constantly changing.

      Boo.

    5. Here's the link for the article. I agree with you, its so new people are still arguing about the ins and outs of it all, but we definitely know low carb works! Fix it? I think they introduced safe starches into the diet, upping glucose levels. They also had a link to a chart showing where you can find foods containing safe starches / good glucose sources.
